  • 10:00 - 10:30 am BUZZ SESSION: Leadership is Multidisciplinary: Strengthening Students' Leadership Capacity/Identity in Any Discipline/Field | Sequetta Sweet

    Information: In this session we will show the interdisciplinary nature of leadership and discuss ways to strengthen students' leadership capacity, identity, and learning to prepare them for practice in any discipline. I teach in the Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership where the doctoral students are from various disciplines and on various career trajectories. My teaching must be inter- and multidisciplinary and be a fit for all disciplines, cultures, races, genders, gender identities, and other differences. I must be able to and have crossed the boundaries of all of these areas and have hones skills to be able to help our faculty develop the leadership skill and practice of their students to prepare them any discipline. I will present proven pedagogical techniques in these areas.
    Format: A buzz session provides 10 minutes of information on the session topic, 10 minutes of small group conversation, and 10 minutes of wrap-up discussion to promote an active learning experience.

In this talk, I will reference my experiences with this app in the virtual classroom (as presented in last year's Week of Teaching, as well as at multiple conferences; see below), and explain how I brought this tool into my face-to-face classrooms in fall 2021.

    Information: In this recorded session, I will demonstrate how to increase student engagement and facilitate active learning by using various active learning activities such as think-pair-share, minute papers etc. I will also go over how to use mentimeter(an online polling tool) to engage students during class.

    Information: To stimulate students' critical thinking, cognitive and affective behaviors e.g. developing empathy within the cultural context of aging and slavery in the Philippines, students were provided a task to read “Lola’s Story “,a compelling narrative of the writer’s longtime family slave. Students' responses to the assignment will be shared as a short demonstration of teaching intercultural lessons by unpacking East-West worldviews. Did the student's outlook on slavery offer a new way of thinking about their own personal and future professional actions? Students’ responses to a survey will be discussed.
