Mission Statement

The mission of the DEIB committee is to foster diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in the School of Health Sciences in order to provide a psychologically safe environment for each student, staff, faculty member, and community that we serve. We also promote empathy and respect for differences, critical awareness, and analyzation of implicit bias, and encourage representation and for all individuals to be co-conspirators against bias and discrimination in any form. 

Who We Serve

Faculty, Staff, and Students in the School of Health Sciences who represent or serve the following historically marginalized and underrepresented subgroups: Race, Ethnicity, Color, Sexual Identity, Gender Identity, SES, language differences, National Origin, Spiritual/Religious Backgrounds, Military, Veterans, Homeless, Disabled/Differently Abled.

Thanks for joining us to shed light on the challenges and disparities faced by Black birthing people in maternal healthcare. The panelist helped Health Science Students, Faculty, and Staff learn more about this major health concern from a truly interdisciplinary perspective (OB/GYNs, social workers, doulas, and community advocates).

Engage with the enlightening panel discussion that explored "A Day in the Life of a Multicultural Healthcare Professional." Esteemed panelists, comprising nurses, OTs, and SLPs from diverse backgrounds, shared invaluable insights into their daily experiences. Focusing on mentorship and advocacy, the event provided a unique perspective on these professions, fostering a meaningful connection between essential Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) concepts and real-world experiences.

Welcome to the School of Health Sciences Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) website! DEIB is at the center of nursing and nursing at ÒùÐÔÊÓƵ. Nursing is a profession that serves a critical role in health promotion, disease prevention, and restoration of individuals, families, and populations. Here at ÒùÐÔÊÓƵ, we are preparing nurse generalists and graduate-level nurse practitioners as professional nurses with a commitment to lifelong learning and the capacity to adapt to change in a multi-cultural, interdependent world. The nursing program provides an environment for excellence to a diverse student body, including those from underrepresented populations, through an interdisciplinary approach to liberal arts, sciences, and professional education. I am hopeful that you find your exploration of our program and DEIB website helpful in bringing about DEIB to the university, your community, profession, and the world.

As DEIB is being attacked on all fronts, now more than ever we must be a collaborative front, seeking to diversify our students, programs, and faculty.  Throughout my career, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging have been the cornerstone of my life; especially as it relates to the Health Sciences. As an educator, administrator, and Black man, it is extremely important to me that the Health Sciences are rooted in DEIB as we move to serving the needs of all communities.
