EOF Student Mahalia Bazile Spent 8 Weeks in Cape Town, South Africa on State Dept. Scholarship
Bazile won the U.S. Department of State鈥檚 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and left her hometown of Newark for Cape Town, South Africa earlier this month. 鈥淚 love it here!鈥 she said in a recent email.
鈥淚 wanted to travel to South Africa to learn indigenous languages and culture, because, as a black person in predominantly white institutions, I want to understand the history and cultural value that lies in Cape Town,鈥 she said. 鈥淚n times of increased cultural misunderstandings and racial tensions, I am deeply interested in learning about South African social culture after apartheid, to build and gain through interpersonal experience a more inclusive and global perspective of the world and its agents.鈥

Benjamin A Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship:
The U.S. Department of State鈥檚 is a grant program enabling students of limited means to study or intern abroad and gain skills that support the nation鈥檚 security and economic competitiveness. Gilman, a Republican congressman from New York who died in 2016, focused on foreign policy throughout his 30 years of service.
EOF students are eligible for Benjamin A. Gilman Study Abroad scholarships, which can greatly reduce the overall cost of studying abroad and can make the difference between a semester in the US or your dream semester abroad.
