Donation Renames Financial Literacy Center for Late Economics Professor

A $2 million commitment  the Center for Economic Development and Financial Literacy after Elizabeth “Betty” Elmore, who spent five decades teaching economics at ������Ƶ. 

Elmore passed away in December after a lengthy illness. Her husband, Richard, of Egg Harbor Township, wanted to honor the memory of his beloved wife by supporting the University's work related to her passion for finance and economics.  

“Betty was proud to be the first female professor in the Economics department, and she was incredibly dedicated to ������Ƶ and her students,” Richard Elmore said. 

The Dr. Elizabeth Elmore Center for Economic Development and Financial Literacy’s mission is to develop engaged and informed students, citizens, voters, workers, consumers, savers and investors who understand the interdependence of national economies in the global community and the role of financial institutions in the sustainability of these relationships. In recent years, Elmore served as director of the center.

⚖️ Criminal Justice Program Endorsed by International Group

������Ƶ’s undergraduate Criminal Justice program recently  the first in the country to earn the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) Endorsement for academic quality.

“It demonstrates that our academics have met a standard that many other schools have not met,” said Marissa Levy, the dean of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. “Students can now feel more confident knowing that an outside organization has reviewed our curriculum and structure and finds it to meet the standards of the field.”

 

Feather Friendly Window Treatment Prevents Bird Strikes

When it comes to , ������Ƶ is crossing its t's and dotting its i's. This month, thousands of white spots were added to the exterior glass on the bridge that connects the Unified Science Center 1 and 2 to prevent bird strikes. 

This new window treatment helps birds in flight spot the glass obstruction that would otherwise reflect sky and open space fooling birds into striking the windows, especially migrants passing through during the spring and fall.

������Ƶ's campus is located within the Atlantic Flyway, a north-south corridor that migratory birds travel on their way to and from breeding and wintering grounds.

Transfer Students Jam Out at ������Ƶ AC

On June 21, Admissions held the Transfer Jam open house at Kesselman Hall on the ������Ƶ Atlantic City campus, just steps away from the Boardwalk and beach. This event offered a relaxing day of fun while providing valuable information to help transfer students make informed decisions about their academic journey. 

"We are so happy to welcome transfer students to our Transfer Jam event," said Admissions Ambassador Lauren Faustino. "We understand the unique needs of transfer students and have tailored this event to provide them with the resources and guidance to make their transition stress-free."

During the event, attendees were able to learn more about credit transfer, speak with financial aid advisors, and take tours with residential life ambassadors. 

"I felt so welcomed at Transfer Jam! The ocean view from the dorm rooms was amazing. The ambassadors were incredibly helpful and answered all my family's questions," said one potential transfer student.

Notably, for the second year in a row, the University was  to the 2023 Transfer Honor Roll by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, which recognizes the achievements of students at associated degree and community colleges.

Students, Faculty Presented at International Conference

Eight ������Ƶ students  on their roles as student leaders and community builders in June at the 47th annual Caribbean Studies Association Conference in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.

According to Shedia Laguer, assistant director of Student Development and recent graduate of the Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership program, the conference presented an academic opportunity that proved invaluable.

“It is proven that high-impact practices (HIPs) like undergraduate research, study abroad, internships, and service-learning are linked to positive academic outcomes,” Laguer said. “Attending the Caribbean Studies Association conference was a pathway for underrepresented minority students from the Caribbean Student Association (CSA) to engage in these HIPs while learning more about their culture and heritage in the Caribbean.”

Update to COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements at ������Ƶ

In light of updated federal and state guidelines on COVID-19, ������Ƶ strongly recommends but no longer requires employees and students to be vaccinated against the virus, effective Monday, June 19, 2023.

The University is updating its requirements to strongly recommend vaccinations, following President Biden’s recent decision to end the COVID-19 national health emergency as well as the scaling back of various health protocols in New Jersey, including vaccination mandates in health care settings, amid declines in cases.

The University will continue to monitor all State and federal health guidance and reserves the right to change its protocols as needed to protect the health and safety of the University community. 

Members of the campus community who test positive for COVID-19 should continue to follow University COVID-19 safety protocols and stay home for at least five days to isolate themselves from others. For further information, please review .

All members of the campus community are strongly encouraged to stay up to date on their COVID-19 vaccine and boosters to protect their own health and the health of those around them.

Roster Verification Reminder for Faculty

Attention all faculty teaching this summer! As Summer Session III is about to begin, it's almost time to Verify your Ospreys!

New this year, faculty are reminded to complete the Roster Verification process for summer courses by confirming student attendance/academic activity. The Roster Verification process for Summer Session III will begin Monday, June 26, and is to be completed by Saturday, July 1. The Office of Financial Aid will use this information to make adjustments to student financial aid disbursements based on each student's confirmed number of credits.

Each instructor will be responsible for verifying student attendance or participation in an academic activity. For online courses, faculty are reminded to include an assignment or discussion activity during the add/drop period so that the student's academic activity can be confirmed.
