Flag Raising Launches Black History Month
Galloway, N.J.鈥&苍产蝉辫; The Unified Black Students Society raised the red, black and green Pan-African flag in a ceremony Tuesday, Feb. 1, marking the start of activities for Black History Month at 淫性视频.
鈥淎lthough a lot has been accomplished, we still have a lot left to do,鈥 U.B.S.S. president Alexsandra Panton told the crowd that braved the nippy weather and snow outside the Arts and Sciences Building.
Distinguished Professor of Social Work and Africana Studies Patricia Reid-Merritt led the traditional libation ceremony honoring and recognizing ancestors and 鈥渢hose who continue the fight.鈥
Program Coordinator Tierra Houston sang "Lift Every Voice and Sing."
Three members of the 淫性视频 community were honored by U.B.S.S. for their work and commitment to 淫性视频 and the Black community. They were Reid-Merritt, 淫性视频 Atlantic City Chief Operating Officer Brian Jackson, and Assistant Director of Student Development Shedia Laguer.
Assistant Professor of Africana Studies Wilbert St. Hilaire, (also known as Kimoni Yaw Ajani), reminded the audience to 鈥渞emember the meaning and significance鈥 of the flag, representing Black for the people, red for their struggle and sacrifices and green for life and the African homeland.
U.B.S.S. Vice President Malikah Stafford reminded the crowd that Black History is 鈥渘ot just a month, it鈥檚 every day, every second. It lives through you. You are Black History. We are Black History.鈥
Laguer encouraged students to attend the many events that are happening throughout the semester.
鈥淔eel the experience,鈥 she said.
National Black History Month started as a method of remembrance for the events and people in the history of the African diaspora. Today, it is an important month of both remembrance, recognition, and education for people of any color.
